Tirupati: More than a lakh of devotees yesterday offered worship at the hill shrine of Lord Venkateswara near here on the occasion of Vaikunta Ekadasi festival, a temple official said.

"Cash offerings alone, apart from gold and silver offerings, dropped in the 'hundi' at the temple by devotees netted about Rs 3.45 crore," temple assistant PRO P. Neelima told PTI.

After offering worship to the idol of the presiding deity of Lord Venkateswara, adorned with several gem set golden ornaments, the devotees walked through the bedecked sacred 'Vaikunta Dwarams (passage)', which is opened once a year on Vaikunta Ekadasi day, encircling the sanctum sanctorum of the ancient shrine.

Marking the occasion, a 'golden chariot' procession with the idol was taken out around the temple. The devotees were allowed into the shrine from 4 am today, she said, adding, the entire temple complex was traditionally illuminated and also bedecked with tons of flowers.
