Demand for broccoli spikes in Vizianagaram

Foodies who crave for it even at higher prices are enjoying the vegetable now. Local traders say they were getting the vegetable from Odisha for sale in the region.
The vegetable is a new arrival in this area and vendors are selling each piece between Rs 15-20. The consumers like to purchase the vegetable and prepare curry to consume with either roti or rice.
As Deputy Director of Horticulture, Lakshminarayana said, “Broccoli is not our crop. Farmers of Odisha, Chhattisgarh are growing it and our traders are getting them to sell it here.
Actually, the vegetable has many nutritional values and is good for health too. It has high demand in the metropolitan cities like Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru. We will try to introduce the crop in our district with the support of government.”
K Lakshmi, a vendor of this vegetable, said that she gets it from Odisha, and consumers who know the taste of this vegetable are purchasing and coming again to buy it.
She expects more demand as awareness spreads. K Bharathi, a consumer said: “I purchased three pieces last week and prepared a recipe.
My children consumed the curry along with poori with relish, which they didn’t eat ever before. So again I came here to purchase it. The taste is also good.”
