Nellore: Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana said that the State government would complete construction of 7,700 houses in the district by January 2018.

The Minister participated in ‘Janmabhoomi-Maa Vooru’ programme at Municipal Urdu School in Ranganayakulapeta here on Thursday. Addressing the gathering, Narayana said 1.2 lakh high quality houses for urban poor will be constructed in all municipalities across the State soon with latest technology.

He distributed new ration cards and Chandranna Sankranti gifts to the beneficiaries and interacted with them. He also inspected works at Penna barrage and directed the officials and contractors to speed up the works for early completion.

He said low per capita income has been affecting revenue of the State. Industries, trading community and educational institutions continued their operations from Hyderabad even after bifurcation and hence the State had lost its financial resources, he explained.

The Minister said they were focusing on improving conditions in municipal schools on par with private and corporate schools. “The government had introduced basic foundation course in these schools to give students edge over others in competitive exams,” he explained.

He said the government is implementing many others programmes for benefit of poor children, who study in these schools. Narayana said they had received around 5.6 lakh applications for new ration cards and there were 39.6 lakh members have already ration cards in the district, the Minister said.

He appreciated the Chief Minister for striving hard for State development. He stated that the government is taking steps to complete Pennar and Sangam barrages by June this year.

The Minister also said that the government had sanctioned Rs 29 crore for both projects. City Mayor Abdul Aziz, former MLA MSK Reddy, TDP leader Dr Z Siva Prasad, corporators Ashraf, Srirama Murthy and others were present.
