Vijayawada: Sankranti festivities began with Bhogi on Friday. Though the High Court upheld the ban on cockfighting and directed the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments to ensure no cockfights take place during the Sankranti festival, cock-fights took place in Edupugallu, Thadepalli, Nunna, Gannavaram and many other parts of Krishna district on Friday on the first day of a three-day Sankranti festivities.

The betting on cockfight went on sans any hurdles in spite of ban imposed by the court. The police who were deployed have become mute spectators without taking action.

The betting was conducted for Rs 1 lakh per each fight, said a participant at Edupugallu.
