Nellore: Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said that works of constructing a multipurpose indoor stadium spread over 8 acres here will begin on Ugadi day. Venkaiah has inaugurated the national-level competitions for kabaddi, kho-kho and wushu at AC Subba Reddy Sports Complex in city on Thursday. Khelo India competitions are being conducted throughout the country in 7 states in different disciplines in January and February 2017. Players from 15 states including Puducherry are taking part in various events.
The Union Minister said kabaddi, kho-kho and wushu would be conducted in Nellore and other sports would be organised in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Rajasthan and other states. Venkaiah said Khelo India competitions are being conducted not only to promote sports at grass-root level but also to help create sports infrastructure in the country. He said the event will provide a platform to the budding talents to compete at national-level.
He further said a sports village is being developed at Mogallapalem village in Nellore district and the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) has acquired 150 acres of land with an acquisition cost of Rs 5.4 crore out of Rs 6 crore sanctioned. “Four sports centres are coming up at Kavali, Udayagiri, Venkatagiri and Vidavalur in the district to promote sports in rural areas,” he added.
Venkaiah also said to promote mass participation in sports and to achieve effective implementation, the existing schemes of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA), Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme (USIS) and National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS) are merged into a single scheme to be named as ‘Khelo India’. Nellore MP Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, SAI Representative Kunwaljeet Singh, SAP Chairman P R Mohan, Mayor Abdul Aziz, MLC Somisetty Chandramohan Reddy were among others present. Earlier, the Union Minister took the salute at the march past and declared open the games.
