Vijayawada: A 10th century AD red sandstone bull sculpture was recovered from the debris of Siva temple at Bahubalendruni Gudem (B B Gudem) near Gannavaram in Krishna district, said Dr E Sivanagi Reddy, CEO of Cultural Centre of Vijayawada and Amaravati, on Friday.

On receiving information from M Subhakar, secretary, Vijayawada Buddha Vihara, Dr E Sivanagi Reddy, along with the Cultural Centre of Vijayawada and Amaravati team reached Bahubalendruni Gudem as part of the campaign ‘Preserve Heritage for Posterity’.

He said that the bull sculpture bears the art, tradition and style such as the neck chains of bells and rattles of Vengi Chalukyan period, the idol was seen mutilated at its hoof portion, hence, it was abandoned and a new idol was installed in the temple. This idol was recovered during the recent renovation works of the temple. Dr Reddy appealed to the State Department of Archaeology and Museums to shift the bull sculpture to Victoria Jubilee Museum, Vijayawada for display.
