Kakinada: The fisheries department as part of safety measures for fisherfolk who venture in to sea for fishing has already in implementation of the DAT [Distress Alert Transmitter] system for emergency alert. Now they have come out with boat tracing and geo-tag devise to cater to the needs of these sections in emergencies like rough weather in sea, cyclone warning in advance there by ensure their safe return of these boat to safer places or to the nearest harbour. This system is going to be installed in 9 fishing boats in East Godavari from last week of January on pilot basis.
There are 2,696 mechanised boats and 390 motored boats in the district which venture in to sea for fishing from Vakalapudi fishing harbour, Dummula Peta, Pavlova Peta in Kakinada urban area Odalarevu, Bhiravapalem, Kartenikona, Uppada and other areas in the district. The mechanised boats venture deep in to sea to the extent of 100 to 200 kms on three to five day fishing tenure The motored boasts also take up fishing activity in areas up to fifty kms and beyond.
It is a known fact that some of the fisherfolk at times overlook cyclone warnings and depressions and end up facing rough weather in deep sea due to different reasons including depression developed in a short span.
In order to cater to the emergencies, the fisheries department will be introducing this geo tag, boat tracing system in East Godavari after successful implementation in Guntur district. The installation of this system was entrusted to Volty IT Solutions, of Hyderabad. According to marketing manager of the company K Adi Seshu along with East Godavari they were entrusted with installation of geo tag- boat tracking system inVisakhapatnam district also Summing it up, East Godavari fisheries DD, Dr. S Anjali said that the system will now be installed in nine boats in selective places on January 23 on pilot basis.
Soon after installing, the same will be extended to all the mechanized and motored boats. This equipment small in size not only alerts the fisherfolk while fishing in deep sea but also provides clear view and location to the officials at district headquarters. This enables us to assess the number of boats in deep sea and take necessary steps for their safe return.
