Anantapur: Member of Parliament Nimmala Kistappa said that the sanctioned pensions should be extended throughout the district based on population in each constituency. The Zilla Parishad general body meeting presided over by ZP chairman Chaman Saheb here on Friday passed a resolution urging the government to increase the number of pensions to the district and sanction them on a saturation mode.
Addressing the members, Chaman said that the district was sanctioned 60,000 pensions and if the members felt that the pensions sanctioned were inadequate, the members could ask for more and pass a resolution to this effect.
Dharmavaram MLA Varadapuram Suri also seconded the resolution. The ZPTC members cutting across party lines raised the issue of funds paucity for carrying on development works in their territorial constituencies.
At one stage, there were heated arguments between the ZPTC members and the mandal presidents as the former took objection to mandal presidents hijacking the time and dominating the meeting by raising issues relating to their respective mandals. When arguments persisted, the ZP Chairman ruled that the meeting belonged basically to ZPTC members as they were elected by the people and not the mandal presidents, who enjoy the status of special invitees to the meeting and therefore could not dominate the ZPTCs. However the mandal presidents remained unconvinced.
Later, DWMA Project Director A Nagabhushanam called upon the members to take full advantage of the farm ponds and soak pits for recharging their bore-wells and the groundwater table in the region.
He said that 33,600 families completed 100 days of work under the NREG scheme in 2016-17. He said that the people could use the 150 working days and added that Rs 1,100 crore worth works had been executed by the NREGS workforce. He revealed that a farm pond for every 5 acres of land has been sanctioned and 35,000 farm ponds have been earmarked for the purpose. Members also raised several issues relating to DRDA, scholarships and other subjects. Government Chief Whip Kalva Sreenivasulu, Kalyandurgam MLA Hamumantharai Chowdary and others were present.
