Visakhapatnam: Former Chief Justice of India, Justice M N Venkatachalaiah described former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao as a resourceful and outstanding personality and called upon the intellectuals to understand the magnitude of his economic reforms.

Justice Venkatachalaiah was here on Saturday to deliver P V Narasimha Rao memorial lecture at a programme organised by Lok Nayak Foundation and shared his reminiscences with PV when he was the Chief Justice of India.

‘When the Prime Minister’s Secretariat had hosted a customary dinner to me as the in-coming Chief Justice and also to the out-going Chief Justice of India along with other VVIPs, PV in the capacity of Prime Minister jocularly told me that the relationship between a Prime Minister and the Chief Justice must be always cordial’, informed the Justice recalling his very first incident with PV.

‘Responding to him immediately, I said that having a smooth and cordial relationship between Chief Justice of India and the Prime Minister is not good for the country’, he added. Even then, the former Prime Minister PV took my response sportively and asked me to have both the propriety and cordiality; the Justice said adding that when he brought out the problems of Supreme Court Judges from the PM’s Secretariat, PV suggested sending him the list for quick redressal.

While delivering the memorial lecture, the Justice called upon the intellectuals to understand the magnitude of PV’s economic reforms. ‘As time went by, I found that he was an outstanding person’, he maintained.

Justice Venkatachalaiah also complimented President of Lok Nayak Foundation Padma Bhushan Dr Y Lakshmi Prasad for his commitment in promoting art and culture as an outstanding scholar in linguistics.

Supreme Court Judge Justice J Chelameswar underscored the need of honouring Prime Minister like PV in the present AP State too without limiting him to Telangana State only as he had strived hard in protecting the country which was on the verge of financial crisis.
