Chittoor: More than 200 auto-rickshaw drivers from Tirupati have staged a dharna at the Collectorate here on Monday, demanding withdrawal of Government Order (GO) 894. They have commenced padayatra at Ambedkar Bhavan in Tirupati on Sunday and reached the Collectorate on Monday. Addressing the gathering, Rafi Hindustani, president of Tirupati-based Inspire Auto-rickshaw Drivers Union, said that several unemployed youth have chosen auto driving as a profession.

He said that several auto drivers will lose their livelihood if the State government makes 8th class pass as basic qualification for driving auto-rickshaws. He demanded the government to withdraw GO 894. He further said that auto drivers are facing troubles with the frequent hike in petrol and diesel prices, besides increase in prices of spare parts.

Rafi alleged that the officials of the Transport department are harassing the auto-rickshaw drivers by imposing penalties without any fault. He warned of more than 5,000 auto drivers in the district would go on an indefinite strike if the government fails to meet their demands. Union’s general secretary I S Khaja made an appeal to the District Collector to resolve their issues. Auto drivers of Chittoor city have extended support to auto drivers of pilgrim city. Later, union leaders have submitted a memorandum to Joint Collector P Venkata Subba Reddy.
