Farmers cry foul over indiscriminate digging of fish ponds, demand ban

Eluru: The farmers of Mogallu village staged a dharna at the Collectorate here on Monday demanding the Collector to initiate action against the landlords who tried to dig fish ponds in the village in violation of norms.

Farmers led by AP Rythu Sangham took out a rally to the Collectorate and staged protests in support of their demand. AP Rythu Sangham district committee president B Balaram, who addressed the gathering at the Collectorate, demanded officials not to accord permissions for digging fish and prawn ponds in agriculture lands that yield two crops every year. Without seeking prior permission, landlords in the village were digging fish ponds, Balaram pointed out. Further, officials of the Revenue, Irrigation, Agriculture and Fisheries departments had been issuing fake certificates,Balaram added.

Without conducting a pre field survey, officials are sanctioning permissions online, Rythu Sangham leader remarked. Due to indiscriminate digging up of aqua ponds, fertile lands are being damaged besides contaminating drinking water tanks, Balaram averred.

He demanded the district Collector to impose a ban on the digging up of aqua ponds in Juvvalapalem, Pamlaparru, Mogallu, Vissakoderu, Gollalakoderu, Garagaparru, Adavikolanu, Jalli Kakinada villages where villagers take up agitations against the ponds.

Later, farmers submitted a memorandum to the District Collector. CPM’s Palakoderu Mandal Secretary Alluri Arun and others participated in the protest.
