Kakinada: Distribution of solar pumpsets under the NTR Jalasiri Scheme is expected to come as a boon for farmers in meeting their power needs for the agriculture sector in the district. As part of the scheme, 100 per cent subsidy is being given to tribal farmers in all 11 agency mandals.

Under this scheme, 5 HP pumpsets, at a cost of Rs 3.69 lakhs, are jointly shared by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) through its nodal agency NREDCAP and APTransco, with matching contribution coming from farmers in plain areas. In tribal areas, DWMA will undertake the responsibility of bearing the farmers’ share.

Out of the total cost of Rs 3.69 lakhs , NREDCAP (New and Renewable Development Corporation of AP) is going to share Rs 1.62 lakhs while APTransco will bear Rs. 1.52 lakhs with the rest of the amount Rs. 55,000 being borne by the farmer-beneficiaries in plain areas, where as in agency areas, District Water Management Agency (DWMA) will bear the farmers’ share making it 100 per cent subsidy for the tribal farmers.

In the first phase, the scheme will cover 34 mandals, out of which three mandals are in agency areas and the remaining are in upland mandals where the farmers are dependent on groundwater. The agency mandals that are covered under the programme are Rajavommangi, Addateegala and Rampachodavaram.

Out of 795 pumpsets, 5 HP-powered pumpsets have been disbursed in the last four months in all these 34 mandals. Of this, three agency mandals share 44 in number and 751 have been allotted to the needy farmers in upland mandals like Prathipadu, Yeleswaram, Kirlampudi, Jaggampeta, Rowthulapudi, Gandepalli, Kotananduru, Tuni and other upland mandals.

On an average, 4 units of power for one HP pumpset totaling 20 units of power can be saved daily on the days of use of these pumpsets. With the introduction of pumpsets, the power bill is expected to go down significantly in all the mandals.

NREDCAP’s district executive engineer, J Nanibabu said that the programme has been taken up in three mandals in the first phase. In the second phase, it will be extended to the remaining eight mandals, including the four submerging mandals that fall under the Polavaram project, the EE clarified.
