Eluru: In a world where there is wide prevalence of gender discrimination, a daughter performed the last rites of her deceased father here on Tuesday.

The deceased, Pali Ramamohan Rao (55) and his wife Ramulamma were residing in Motepallivari Street in Eluru one town area. Ramamohan Rao was working as a clerk in a shop in the city.

The couple had two daughters Madhavilatha and Lakshmi Sowjanya. As the parents had no male child, they raised Madhavilatha like a son who completed PG from Andhra University.

Presently, she is doing her Ph.D in Biotechnology in the US. Lakshmi Soujanya, the second daughter is also pursuing Ph.D from Kanpur IIT.

The death of Ramamohan Rao occurred on Monday when neither of the two was in the city.Madhavilatha expressed her will to perform last rites to the departed father.

In the afternoon, Madhavilatha took out Kavidi at graveyard at Venkanna Cheruvu in the southern street of the city and lit the pyre.
