Amaravati: Following the guidelines from Supreme Court, the State Excise department issued notices to 700 bars and liquor shops which are within the 500 metres distance from national highway and state highways across the State.

The shops have already been given licence for their operations up to March end. As per the previous licensing policy, auction should be conducted before March and new permission including renewals should be given from April 1.

But the government has not taken decision so far whether to cancel the shops totally or renew the licenses by allowing the same shops to be relocated at 500 meters distance from the highways without violating the court orders.

Actually the State government is supposed to start the shop tendering and new shop allocation auction process from January onwards.

But the Excise department has not initiated the process so far due to SC orders, which may necessitate some changes. Already some of the license holders have approached the courts on the previous directions.

Excise Minister Kollu Ravindra speaking to this newspaper said that presently the government has taken decision to implement the court orders as per the guidelines. But the government wants to introduce new liquor policy after taking all the considerations.

He said that the government officials visited and studied the policies of various States. Reacting to a question, he said there is a proposal to reduce the license fees based on demand by shop owners.
