Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has proposed the annual budget of Rs 3,143.97 for 2017-18 increasing the last year’s budget by Rs 210 crore.

Special Officer and Collector Praveen Kumar has given his nod to the proposed budget on Tuesday after necessary omissions and commissions made by Municipal Commissioner M Harinarayanan which was released here on Wednesday at a press conference.

Disclosing details of the budget here on Wednesday, the Commissioner told reporters that the total expected income and expected capital income, including the opening balance is Rs 3,223.56 crore of which the expected revenue expenditure and expected capital expenditure is Rs 2,130.93 crore leaving a surplus of Rs 79.59 crore.

“Of the total expected own (GVMC’s) revenue of Rs 1,177.48 crore, Rs 350 crore is from the property tax, the major source of revenue, Rs 242.80 crore as assigned revenue and Rs 170 crore through bulk and semi-bulk water charges,” he said.

Of the proposed total Rs 3,143.97 crore budget, Rs 640 crore was allocated for engineering works, Rs 155 crore for urban community development project, Rs 243 crore for water supply, Rs 65 crore for SC and ST project works, Rs 170 crore for AMRUT scheme and 99 crore for JNNURM works.

Harinarayanan disclosed that of the total expected revenue of Rs 737 crore, Rs 272 crore from the town planning wing, Rs 27 crore from the public health department, Rs 250 crore from the water supply wing and the remaining from other departments.

Though the municipal corporation is getting Rs 170 crore through town planning wing annually, there is a possibility to get an additional income of Rs 100 crore through regularsation of illegal constructions scheme.

He said that a sum of Rs 37 crore has been allocated to the education sector alone and the budget proposals have been done after a critical review by all heads of departments and it was also uploaded in the municipal website for public purpose.

To a query, he replied that the Swachh Sarvekshan Survey-2017 is going on for which the public response is encouraging.
