Chittoor: At last, some TDP leaders have managed to demolish the 60-year-old Mahatma Gandhi statue here on the eve of Republic Day celebrations.

The entire operation was executed in a discreet manner, leaving citizens shell-shocked as they saw the broken pieces of the statue around the spot.

On Tuesday night, as the city was sleeping, the TDP bigwigs managed police and brought down the statue. “Without caring for the sentiments of the people in the city, TDP cadre knocked down the statue,” rues CPI city secretary P Nagarajan while expressing his anguish.

Meanwhile, Chittoor MLA D A Satyaprabha, who is reportedly behind this demolition, has readied a metal statue, to replace the old one and it is slated to be inaugurated by Environment and Forests Minister Bojjala Gopalakrishna Reddy and in-charge Minister P Narayana on Thursday.

Home Minister Chinna Rajappa, who visited Chittoor on Tuesday, instructed the police authorities to take all steps to avoid any untoward incidents during demolition. Barring TDP, all other political parties have condemned the act.
