Kurnool: The II Town police arrested seven persons on charges of stealing mobile phones from the passengers by travelling in shared auto-rickshaws. All the accused, who were apprehended at Bangarpeta, were produced before media on Thursday.

District Superintendent of Police Ake Ravi Krishna said the seven accused, Syed Shaik Sha Vali, M Teja, Shaik Sha Sha Vali, Shaik Shavali, Shaik Akbar Basha and Shaik Vali Basha were resident of Muzzafarnagar and were habitual offenders. They formed a gang and steal the cellphones, money and valuables from passengers by travelling in shared autorickshaws posing as passengers.

On receiving several complaints of the cellphone thefts, Kurnool DSP D V Ramana Murthy formed a team comprising II Town Circle Inspector D Prabhakar, Sub Inspectors Ch Khaza Vali, M Chandrasekhar Reddy, P Mohan Kishore and constables and apprehended the accused at Bangarpeta on Thursday. Thirty-eight cellphones worth Rs 2.30 lakhs besides Rs 15,000 cash was seized from their possession.
