Tirupati: The arrests of activists and leaders of political parties and youth organisations in a big number overshadowed Republic Day celebrations in the pilgrim city on Thursday.

Tension prevailed for some time at S V University administrative building here in the morning when the police took into custody a group of YSR Congress party activists led by its youth leader Abhinay Reddy, son of YSRCP senior leader Bhumana Karunakar Reddy.

The protesters grappled with the police who after much struggle detained Abhinay and 30 others foiling the gathering of youth in the university campus.

Various students and youth organisations including DYFI, SFI, AISF, Janasena, GVS etc. planned a gathering at SV University to observe protest day on R Day condemning the State and Central governments for their apathy on SCS issue.

Another batch of students led by DYFI district secretary S Jayachandra were arrested at Mahatma Pule Statue Junction when they were marching to S V University while District Congress President P Venugopal Reddy was arrested along with his supporters on Gandhi Road when they were going in a procession to the university.

Besides, police arrested a batch of students from Sriram Engineering College at S V University and arrests of youth were made at several places in the city preventing them from reaching the university. YSRCP senior leader and MLA P Ramachandra Reddy was kept under house arrest at his residence in SV Nagar and party general secretary Bhumana Karunakar Reddy was arrested along with a group of party activists near party office when they tried to take out a candle light rally.

Police pickets were set up at different universities and in some colleges as a preventive measure against assembling of youth while patrolling was intensified in the city. In other words police forces were ubiquitous in the city overshadowing the R Day celebrations. Senior officials including DIG Prabhakar who was camping here monitored the law and order situation.
