Eluru: Farmers of Mulalanka village in Polavaram mandal staged a hunger strike at Polavaram project site demanding the government to stop dumping of earth and sand into the agriculture lands by a contracting agency.

Following the hunger strike taken up by farmers Tadi Manga Rao, Sangineedi Venkatakrishna at Polavaram village, police force has been deployed in the village as a precautionary measure.

Polavaram contracting agency officials and workers are using the agriculture lands as the dumping yard, lamented the agitated farmers.

Despite clear orders by the court to the officials not to dump earth and sand in the agriculture lands, workers belonging to the contracting agency continue to do so, said farmers.

203 acres of land are being owned by 148 farmers and paddy and other crops are being cultivated in the agricultural lands, said farmers.

The government has acquired 203 acres for dumping the earth and sand in the agricultural land. Without giving any compensation, officials directed the contracting agency to dump the sand material in the agriculture lands, averred farmers.

As a result, the agricultural fields wherein three crops in a year are being cultivate have now become rendered useless, said farmers.

Though the farmers belonging to Itukalakota village have agreed to partake 300 acres of land for the purpose of dumping yard, officials have not used those lands instead are using the agricultural lands in Mulalanka as the dumping yard, pointed out farmers.

“Our lands will fetch Rs.40 to 50 lakh per acre. Further, officials have not announced proper compensation to the agricultural lands.

Officials have colluded with contracting agency people to deny appropriate compensation to farmers. Due to large dumping of sand and earth into agricultural lands, great danger is posted to the agricultural lands and farmers are made to struggle to supply feed to the cattle”, said farmers.

Polavaram CI K Bala Raju, SI Srihari Rao along with police force descended on the village. Police officers tried in vain to convince the agitators to give up their agitation.

The agitating farmers refuse to heed to requests made by police and hell bent on continuing the agitation. With the presence of police force at the strike camp, tension prevailed in the area.
