Chittoor: Ignoring the sentiments of the police personnel and the people of Chittoor city, stage has been to set to demolish 43-year-old I Town police station building here. The Chittoor municipal council has issued a notice to District SP for vacating the police station building long back for constructing a statue island. It was also decided to construct a statue island in which all the existing statues of national leaders from the city would be shifted to the museum. There has been serious protest from the police personnel. However, the civic body has shown alternative accommodation for the police station.

Meanwhile, the TDP functionaries suggested shifting of police station to the vacant building situated in Kongareddy Palli vegetable market. While former Rajya Sabha member Durga Ramakrishna and certain TDP leaders have advised the police authorities to construct a viable building at MSR Municipal Park which is in the heart of the city. It is also learnt that there has been a serious protest from senior officials on shifting the police station. Even political parties like Congress, YSRCP and Left parties of the city have vehemently opposed the proposed demolition.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Saturday, in-charge Mayor P Subramanyam made it clear that there was no option for the police except shifting from the existing building. “A committee headed by Chittoor MLA D A Satyaprabha had finalised a city beautification project with the approval of District Collector Siddarth Jain. The civic body has decided to construct a statue island in which all the statues of national leaders would be shifted to the proposed site. Already, the compound wall of the police station was demolished for constructing the platform to the proposed Gandhi statue,” he reiterated.
