Visakhapatnam: Collector Praveen Kumar appealed to the parents to help make Vizag a polio-free district by getting their children immunised.
Lunching the first round of National Pulse Polio Immunisation programme by administering polio drops to a kid here at the Urban Community Health Centre, Chinna Waltair, on Sunday, he felt that parents and family elders should take the responsibility, along with medical and health machinery, in immunising their children.

He disclosed that elaborate arrangements have been made to immunise 4.27 lakh children of whom 1.92 lakh from rural areas, 1.39 lakh under the limits of GVMC, 79,539 in the Agency and the remaining in the Urban Family Welfare Centres. He said para medical staff assisted by ANMs will conduct house-to-house survey on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and immunise those children who were not immunised in the polio drive on Sunday.

District Immunisation Officer Dr Vijayalakshmi, district coordinator of government hospitals Dr B K Nayak, district leprosy officer Dr Ramesh, chief medical officer (health) Dr Hemanth, district surveillance officer Dr Pardhasarathi, DEMO Dhanalakshmi were present.

Minister for Human Resource Development Ganta Srinivasa Rao launched pulse polio drive at the Girijan Bhavan by administering drops to a child. Speaking on the occasion, he said that polio should be completely eradicated to achieve a healthy society. District nodal officer Dr G Savitri and others were present.

Later, Dr Savitri visited the Agency areas, including Chintapalli, while DM&HO Dr J Sarojini, who monitored the programme in urban areas, said that the response from the parents was overwhelming at all the centres and hoped that the district could register over 99 per cent immunisatiion.
