Vijayawada: Children and women fear to walk in the city streets as stray dogs have bitten nearly 710 people within 24 days in 2017.

The Vijayawada Government General Hospital officials said that nearly 30 dog bite cases are being registered in the hospital everyday and Shaik Raja Sahab Prasuti Hospital doctor Nazir also said that the dog bite cases were on the rise in the city and urged the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation officials to put an end to stray dog menace.

Senior citizens are avoiding morning and evening walks in the streets due to street dogs and one of the senior citizens Sarada Devi said that she feared to walk on roads, along with her pet dogs, because stray dogs are attacking her pet dog.

People are fearing to walk alone in some streets in the city due to fear of street dogs and some of them were diverting their way to other streets to avoid stray dogs.

Founder of the Animal Care Land and coopted member of Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) N V Srikanthi Babu said that Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and AWBI have mutually conducted sterilisation and vaccination to nearly 1700 stray dogs in the first phase at Sing Nagar in the city. He also said that his team members have decided to sterilise 10,000 streets dogs in the city to curb stray dog menace. Srikanthi Babu sought the cooperation of people in sterilisation of stray dogs in the city.
