​Guntur: Guntur Municipal Corporation Commissioner S Nagalakshmi, Guntur West MLA Modugula Venugopala Reddy and Guntur East MLA Md Mustafa on Monday performed Bhumi Puja at SVN Colony in Guntur city for underground drainage works which will be executed at a cost of Rs 733 crore.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley formally launched the UG scheme with remote control last year while attending a function in the capital region.

Speaking on this occasion, Venugopala Reddy said that GMC will take up the project with the financial assistance provided by the World Bank.

He further said that if the project is completed, the city can get rid of the problem of mosquitoes. He thanked Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu for sanctioning the project and directed the officials to complete the project by December 2018. He asked the officials to update him on the progress of works once in every 15 days.

Guntur west MLA Shaik Mustafa said that the comprehensive drinking water project works were delayed due to technical reasons. He urged the officials to complete the underground drainage works within the stipulated time. He said if the underground drainage system is provided, sanitation will improve in the city.

He felt that there is a need to bring more funds from the government for the development of Guntur city. GMC Commissioner S Nagalakshmi said that the underground drainage system will cover 1,083 km in the city including merged villages.

She said the GMC got all the permissions from the government an year ago to take up the works. She said she will hold a meeting with the police, telephone operators, SPDCL and other government departments to seek their cooperation to ensure quick completion of the works.

Nagalakshmi directed the officials to fill the holes dug for underground drainage within 15 days. She said that the comprehensive drinking water scheme was nearing completion in the city. Public Health SE Maddali Griridhar, GMC SE Gopala Krishna Reddy and other officials were present.
