Vijayawada: State Irrigation officials made it clear that it is not possible to maintain Minimum Draw Down Level (MDDL) at Pulichintala Project to ensure water to Telangana Lift Irrigation schemes as per the demand by the Telangana State government.

They said that providing water to Krishna delta was the top priority as per declaration of the project and the present water level at Prakasam Barrage would not allow them to maintain MDDL at Pulichintala Project.

Following attempt of farmers of Nalgonda district to stop water supply to Andhra Pradesh from K L Sagar Pulichintala Project on Saturday alleging that they were deprived of irrigation water due to water being released to AP, Telangana Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao wrote a letter to AP government to ensure MDDL at the project to protect standing crops under the lift irrigation schemes in the foreshore areas of the project.

Speaking to The Hans India, Krishna Delta Chief Engineer Y S Sudhakar said maintaining MDDL condition was only to ensure power generation at the project but not for the release of water to Telangana State. “It is the project designed exclusively for the requirements of Krishna delta.

Telangana had built the lift irrigation schemes after the project declaration in 2004 and against the project’s design and conditions. How can we fulfil the demand which was not included in project conditions,” he pointed out.

He also said they would not be able to release water to Krishna delta and fulfil drinking water needs in delta area from February last week if the MDDL is maintained as there was severe water shortage in Nagarjuna Sagar Project. The project MDDL is 9.54 tmcft, Full Reservoir Level (FRL) is 45 tmcft and crest gates level is 3.6 tmcft.

The Chief Engineer said the present water level at Prakasam Barrage is 10.2 ft against the actual level of 12 ft. He said, “We have to give water to Krishna delta at least 15 days a month during summer starting from February end which will be a difficult task for us. We received only 8.5 tmcft of water from Nagarujuna Sagar Project since December 27.”

“With shortage of supplies from Nagarjuna Sagar, how can we maintain 9.54 TMC level at Pulichintala Project and give water to Telangana.” the CE questioned. A senior engineer said Krishna River Water Management Board (KRMB) only can decide the issue.
