Anantapur: Civil Supplies Minister Paritala Sunitha called upon womenfolk to be prepared for a long struggle to achieve 50 per cent reservations in jobs, education institutions and in legislatures and political parties.

Flagging off a women's rally, which is a prelude to National Women Parliamentary Summit scheduled to be held in Amaravati from February 10 to 12, here on Thursday, Sunitha said that NT Rama Rao was the first to espouse the cause of women.

He was the one to pass a law in the Assembly extending 33 per cent reservations to women in all spheres of life. And it was Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu who spearheaded the women self-help groups movement. She said that he made a woman as a Minister of Civil Supplies and proved his commitment to their welfare.

The Minister said that the number of Assembly seats would increase to 18 from 14 in the district and when it happened the reservations should increase from 33 per cent to 50 per cent.

“Women should rise to the occasion and shoulder responsibilities. Despite women being elected as people's representatives, men are taking over their official responsibilities, defeating the purpose of reservations. Women would be in the forefront of any agitation and even fast, for their cause,” she exhorted.

Mayor M Swaroopa called upon womenfolk to fight for 50 per cent reservations in all spheres of life. She lamented that many legislations made for women's welfare were not being implemented. District Revenue Officer Malleswari Devi said women commanded respect in Vedic times but the same eroded with the passage of time.

“Vedas say that angels tread in places where women are honoured. Social reformers Raja Rammohan Rai and Kandukuri Veeresalingam strived hard for the rights of women,” she said and called upon women to come onto to a single platform and fight for their rights and freedom.
