Nandikotkur (Kurnool): The Chaya Usha Sametha Suryanarayana temple located in a thick forest in Nandikotkur was built in 1026 by the Alampur Chalukya King.

He and other rulers were ardent devotees of the Sun god. This temple is famous as the sun rays strike the legs of the deity on Rathasapthami day on February 3, when ‘kalyanam’ and ‘annadanam’ are offered by the devotees.

The temple is surrounded by 21 villages of Biradolu, Nagaluti, Juturu, Bairapura, Lingapuram adjacent to Nandikotkur. In 1950, a person in drunken state damaged the Sun god’s idol after the daily worship.

In 1995, the then Nandikotkur MLA Byreddy Rajasekhara Reddy got the idol repaired and restored it. Special pooja is conducted to the deity on the Maga Suddha Dasami day. A large number of devotees from four States participate in the rituals.
