APMIP project officer A Surya Prakash Rao said that the government had given top priority to drip irrigation and added that last year the APMIP had spent Rs 200 crores for drip irrigation in the State. Now plans worth Rs.300 crores have been submitted for approval, he said.

He said that the farmers were showing interest in taking up the cultivation of horticulture crops like oil palm, coconut and cocoa and other orchards with the implementation of drip irrigation.

They also realised the benefits of the irrigation method in view of the problems like workers, higher usage of water and other problems in other crops like paddy.

Surya Prakash Rao reviewed the micro-irrigation performance of micro-irrigation projects with various officials, representatives of companies and agencies here on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, the APMIP Officer said that Andhra Pradesh stood in first place in the country in implementing the drip irrigation.

He said enthused by this, the State government had given targets and accordingly the department was implementing the drip irrigation in horticulture crops. “So far, 17 lakh acres have been covered under drip irrigation.

In West Godavari district, district Collector K Bhaskar set the target of 25,000 hectares for implementation of drip irrigation in the district. As per the target, all officials should concentrate and complete the target by March this year,” he said.

The official said in 2016-17 financial year, only 7,000 hectare are covered under drip irrigation. In the present two months, the officials have to educate the farmers to take up drip irrigation in 17,000 hectares in the district. He said the Nabard praised the implementation of drip irrigation in the district and officials should work for achieving the goal to retain the first place.
