Pithapuram: Some students of the government primary school at Bhogapuram village of the mandal on Tuesday turned sick upon consuming mid-day meals infested with worms. Also, the catering contractor served rotten eggs to students as part of Tuesday’s menu.

The villagers intervened and got ailing students treated at a hospital.
The catering contractor—The Alluri Sitaramaraju Trust, Bendapudi–supplies mid-day meals to the school.

For the past two days, students and their parents have been complaining about the bad quality of food.

The parents lodged a complaint with the school headmaster after students complained of stomach-ache and nausea. He explained to them that he had taken their complaint to the contractor’s notice.

On a complaint, Tahsildar Suguna and Mandal Education Officer Subrahmanyam visited the school, received complaints from villagers and inspected the food served.

Suguna said that the contractor siphoned off the Swarna variety of rice supplied to the mid-day meals scheme and replaced it with inferior variety.

She questioned the catering contractor about the bad quality of food and warned the contractor. She assured the villagers of necessary steps to ensure that the food is prepared at the school premises.
