Rajamahendravaram: Pandemonium took place in the general body meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Rajamahendravaram held on Wednesday. The YSR Congress Party and BSP corporators expressed anger over distribution of pensions and lack of development in slum areas.

The ruling party itself targeted Mayor Pantam Rajani Sesha Sai on the revised master plan. Before the beginning of the council meeting, nearly 1,000 YSRCP activists obstructed the vehicles of Mayor, MLA and MLC from entering the corporation office before police arrested them. The ruling party acted as opposition party for the most of the time in the council meeting.

When the council meeting begun at 10.30 am on Wednesday, the YSR Congress Party corporators led by its floor leader Medapati Sharmila Reddy came down heavily on old-age pensions and lone BSP member Barre Anu Helenia observed silent protest on the problems prevailing in quarry area.

When the stalemate continued for one hour, the Mayor has directed YSRCP members and BSP members to leave the council hall. In a rare development, Class 4 employees were called in to take the agitating members out of the council meeting.

But, the members left the hall without much fuss. During the debate, verbal war took place between Rajamahendravaram rural MLA Gorantal Butchaiah Chowdary and YSRCP floor leader Sharmila Reddy. The latter alleged that most of the pensions were sanctioned in ruling party wards ignoring wards belong to opposition parties and demanded more pensions.

Meanwhile, four independent corporators staged a walk out alleging that the officials were not implementing IRIS properly in sanctioning old-age and widow pensions. Heated discussions took place on the revised master plan in the council meeting. Some of the corporators complained that the suggestions made by the members with regard to the revised master plan were not taken in account while sending it to the government.

Even MLC Adireeddi Appa Rao questioned the officials for taking two months to send revised master plan to the government after the approval of the council and on why the suggestions of the corporators were not recorded before sending it to the government. He made it clear that the council is the supreme body and it should be respected.

Rajamahendravaram rural MLA Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdary has made it clear that the suggestions made by the members must be included in the master plan. Stating that none including officials, people’s representatives and council members were permanent, he expressed anger on why the resolution was sent to the government without recording minutes. He told the mayor that she should have sent the resolution approved by the council much earlier.
