Visakhapatnam: The rural police on Tuesday rescued a 50-year-old real estate businessman P Lova Raju from the clutches of abductors from a house where he was held hostage at knife point in Chodavaram.

Lova Raju, a native of Seethaiahpeta under Butchaihpeta mandal in the district, was kidnapped in Narsipatnam when he went there for a business deal on February 17 and the kidnappers demanded Rs 5 lakh ransom for his release.

Based on the complaint from Raju’s brother-in-law Ch Pydikonda, Chodavaram police led by Inspector Y Murali Rao investigated the case in various aspects and rescued the kidnapped Lova Raju on Monday night.

They also arrested seven persons and launched a manhunt for one more accused in the case.

It was Raju’s friend Y Jagga Rao, who hatched a plan to kidnap Raju for ransom. On February 17, Rao made a phone call to Raju and invited him to Narsipatnam for a real estate deal.

Believing him, Raju went there to see a piece of land only to be kidnapped by Rao and seven others. He was taken to Chodavaram in a car and held hostage in a room on the outskirts of Chodavaram.

The kidnappers made a phone call to Raju’s brother-in-law Ch Pydikonda and demanded Rs 5 lakh ransom for release of Raju. Pydikonda, who met the two of the kidnappers, U Siva Prakash and M Chakravarthi on February 18 to pay Rs 2.5 lakh, clicked their photos secretly. Later, he approached the Chodavaram police and lodged a complaint.

Acting on a tip-off, police nabbed Prakash when he was inside an ATM to withdraw money on February 20 and later rescued Raju and nabbed six more persons.

Police also seized two cars, one bike, Rs 6,500 cash and mobile phones from them. The arrested were identified as Y Jagga Rao, K Bennibabu, U Sivaprakash, D Ramesh, M Chakravarti, T Sattibabu and S Suresh and one more accused G Appa Rao is still at large.

Sources said that Lova Raju had gained profits in real estate business as well as a few other illegal businesses and hence Jagga Rao and others kidnapped him for easy money. Raju was admitted to hospital as he was severely beaten up by the kidnappers.
