Kakinada: The nomination process for the lone MLC seat in East Godavari which will conclude by Tuesday the 28 February was the hot topic for discussions among political circles in the district. While there is hectic political activity in TDP in selection and choice of candidates, uncertainty seems to be looming large in the camp of principal opposition party, the YSRC. The Congress which has virtually no representation after its severe drubbing in 2014 polls is said to have no role to play in this election.

As far the TDP is concerned, the choice between young leaders and veterans is said to have turned out as crucial criteria in the final selection. In this context, the name of ZPTC member Perabattula Raja has surfaced in the lists.

It is said that the TDP leadership wants to select someone from Kapu community from this part of the district to neutralise Mudragada’s Kapu Nadu movement. The party circles are of the opinion that though the support for Mudragada on the decline as a whole, whatever support he enjoys is from Konaseema area when compared to other parts in the district.

As far as other aspirant from Konaseema area Metla Ramana Babu is concerned, the party circles admit that except the fact that he is son of late Dr. Metla Satyanarayana Rao and brother in-law of Kakinada MP, Thota Narasimham, his political experience and association with TDP is less.

The TD circles also admit that though Deputy CM and home minister Nimmakayala Chinarajappa also hails from Konaseema, he represents Peddapuram Assembly segment in district upland areas.

The other strong contender is Jyotula Chanti Babu from Jaggampeta assembly segment in upland areas. It is said that the party leadership is sympathetic towards him on the grounds of his financial condition after losing two successive elections in 2009 and 2014. The party circles admit that the leadership wants to provide him some solace by considering him as party candidate for the MLC election as the party has absolute majority among electorate.
