The Volvo bus (AP02TC7146) belonging to Diwakar Travels was proceeding to Hyderabad from Bhuvaneswar via Vijayawada when the accident occurred. The front portion of the bus was mangled badly and police had tough time to rescue the passengers who were trapped inside the bus.

The injured passengers were taken to government hospitals at Nandigama, Jaggayyapet and Vijayawada.The ill-fated Diwakar Travels bus carrying 44 passengers lost control and took a plunge between two culverts around 12 feet deep at 5.45 am. By the time police reached the spot, six passengers were dead and almost all passengers in the bus sustained injuries.

Five of them, including a woman died at while undergoing treatment. Most of the passengers suffered severe head injuries and fractures as the bus jumped the railing and fell into the canal in between the two flyovers. Immediately after coming to know about the accident, Penuganchiprolu and Nandigama police with the help from villagers of Mullapadu took part in the rescue operations. Police used gas cutters to pull out the trapped passengers from the mangled bus.

Police and locals shifted the injured passengers to the Nandigama government and private hospitals with the support of three ambulances. According to police, eleven passengers undergoing medical treatment at Vijayawada Government General Hospital, 14 at Andhra Hospital, Gollapurdi and seven in Help hospital, Vijayawada. Nandigama MLA Tangirala Sowmya and Jaggayyapeta MLA Sriram Rajagopal (Tataiah) rushed to the spot and supervised the rescue operations.

The deceased have been identified as Nallabothu Krishna Reddy (32), Nallabothu Shankar Reddy, both brothers from Kodada of Suryapeta Mandal, Baladev (39) Bhubaneswar, Panga Tulasamma (45) Srikakulam district, Kota Madhusudana Reddy Hyderabad, SK Bash, Vijayawada, Vidyapathi (34) State of Odisha, Adinarayana, Tadipatri, Diwakar travels Volvo bus driver, , Pattamsetti Prudvi from Guntur district and MD Tayyab, Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas Rao visited the government hospital in Vijayawada and enquired about the health of injured passengers. He directed the GGH DME to shift the injured to special ward for providing better treatment.

Later addressing the media persons at GGH, Kamineni Srinivas Rao said that Rs 5 lakh compensation will be paid to the deceased family under Chandranna Bima scheme and Rs 3 lakh for the families of the deceased, who do not have insurance and Rs 2 lakh for the deceased belonging to other states.

The injured will be provided free medical treatment from the government side, he said. Later, he visited Nandigama area hospital and consoled the relatives of the deceased. He asked the medical authorities for quick completion of postmortem to the deceased and hand over the bodies to the relatives.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police N Sambasiva Rao along with other police officials and inspected the accident spot. Penuganchiprolu police registered a case against the management of Diwakar Travels. He said that many versions for the reason of the accident like over speeding, drowsiness and over-taking are expressed by the passengers. He said thorough investigation will be conducted on the mishap.
