Vijayawada: Transport strike evoked lukewarm here on Tuesday. Autos and other private vehicles plied as usual at some places. All major trade unions except ruling party’s TNTUC extended support to the strike. A public meeting was held at Lenin Centre in which Ch Baburao (CPM), Donepudi Sankar (CPI), Gautam Reddy (YSRCP) and AP Lorry Owners Association president Eswar Rao took part.

The speakers at the meeting came down heavily on the State and Central governments for enhancing service charges. They termed the charges anti-people. AITUC state secretary Obulesu lambasted the governments’ for burdening the people with taxes.

Tension prevailed for some time at Eluru Locks when the protesters took out a rally in support of the strike.
A group of TNTUC obstructed the rally leading to tension. The police had to intervene and disperse the warring mobs.

At many places in cities, some autos go off the roads. As autos participated in strike, people depended upon other modes of transport. Rush in RTC-run buses was more than normal.
