Vijayawada: The Smart Parking Project initiated by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) four months ago is yet to take off. The civic body initiated the project with an aim to providing information to people on space availability in various parking lots on M G Road (Bandar road) and some other places in the city. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has taken up this project along with technology partners Cisco India.

According to Vijayawada Municipal Corporation estate officer Ch Krishna Murthy, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has identified 29 parking lots on Bandar Road and other places for the real time parking interface. As part of this, motorists will be provided information of the space available in the parking lots through a mobile app or the website. It can be easier to them to know about parking place available before they start at home.

Traffic problems are multifold in the city after it was declared as temporary capital due to the huge increase in the number of four- wheelers and two-wheelers. Motorists are parking vehicles on roadside which is leading to traffic chaos on busy roads and market places.

On other hand, the current available places, including NTR Complex and Rajagopalachari Parking Complex near Besant Road, which is one of the busiest market places in the city and other parking lots on Eluru Road and Bandar Road, are inadequate to carry out the increasing needs of the city.

Furthermore, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation initiated Smart Parking Project and it is initially has been taken up on Bandar Road. However, the VMC has not identified required parking lots yet and the process is going on. Krishna Murthy said VMC Commissioner will have a joint inspection with traffic police soon for identification of parking lots.

“We have already identified 29 parking lots on Bandar Road and some more have to be identified”, he said. Lack of sufficient place on Bandar Road and the other areas was one of the major problems in implementing the project, an official said.

As part of the smart parking technology, the surface of the pavement will be fixed with vehicle detection sensors which will detect the presence of vehicles and send data to central server. The server will sent information on vacant space to customers through mobile app and website.
