Rajamahendravaram: Businessmen and traders woo customers with offers of gifts and discounts. To improve business, sometimes they hit upon novel ideas in introducing new products. A small paan kiosk owner at the busy Kotagummam area of the city is no exception. His new product ‘fire paan’ has been figuring on everyone’s lips in the city.

He pushes a lighted paan into the mouth of the customers and says it is completely safe to chew the paan as the flame gets put off as soon as it is put into the mouth. There is no problem of getting singed from the fire. He describes the fire paan as an aid to digestion and causes no side effects to customers, who range from children to the senior citizens.

The shop-owner, Durga Rao, is running the business from a small kiosk in the high traffic-density area of Kotipalli bus station. The fire paan is hitherto available only in Gujarat and in the cities of Hyderabad and Mumbai. Durga Rao, who received training in preparation of the paan, introduced it in the Rajamahendravaram market.

Besides being absolutely safe, the moment the paan is put into the mouth it gets melted leaving a sweet taste in the mouth. The fire paan is useful to get rid of nicotine addiction. Moreover, it is a very good antidote to common cold.

The ingredients that go into making of the special paan is mouth freshener, jelly, pista, badam and dates. Amidst enthusiastic onlookers, Durga Rao inserts the fire paan into the mouth of the customers. Unlike other varieties of paan which produce saliva requiring the person chewing it to spit in the public, a common health hazard, the new variety seldom does.

The special paan is available in the city market for the past several months. A special kind of paan flavour along with cloves gives the spicy effect to the paan. Durga Rao, with fire in his belly to do something differently, has hit upon this idea taking a cue from other cities and states to improve business prospects of his paan kiosk. Durga Rao runs the paan shop, which is in his name, along with his brother in the business district of the city.
