Amaravati: Leader of the Opposition YS Jaganmohan Reddy was at his best to push the TDP government into a tight spot over the issue of special category status (SCS) during a debate on motion of thanks to the Governor’s address in the Assembly on Thursday.

Training guns against the government, he sought to depict the TDP-NDA ruling partners as traitors and betrayers as they allegedly failed to realise their election-eve commitment of the SCS. Reddy accused Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu with compromising on the issue with his ally, hurting the sentiment and interests of the State.

“After all, Naidu has piloted a proposal in the Assembly seeking the Centre to grant the special category status and get it passed unanimously twice in the past. Now he says the package doled out by the Centre is better than the status. Does it indicate the double tongue of the CM,” he taunted.

He said industrial progress in the truncated state took a back seat for want of incentives for start-ups which were guaranteed by the special category status. In a bid to buttress his argument, Jagan has even reminded CM of having pressed for SCS for 15 years.

Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao disallowed him to speak at some point of time. With this, the YSRCP MLAs went to the podium expressing resentment over the Speaker’s action. The House sidetracked the scheduled agenda with the noisy slogans raised by the opposition members in support of their leader.

Naidu strongly defended his government’s stand on the special package vis-à-vis the special category status with an assurance that he would go to any extent to protect the interests of the State. He said Jagan has no moral right to speak on the issue as he is known for his unruly behaviour bordering ‘criminal nature’, resulting in heated arguments between the opposition and the treasury benches.

In a bid to drive his point home, Naidu recalled that the central government had granted Rs 1,400 crore grants for construction of the capital Amaravati and Rs 700 crore for the development of seven backward districts in North Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema districts because of his untiring efforts. He said he has agreed to take the special package only to protect the interests of the state.
