Vijayawada: State government’s plan to construct a star hotel on five acres of Transco land in the city to boost tourism has sparked an agitation by its employees. Many parties, including Congress, CPM, joined the stir launched by the employees of the Transco.

When contacted by The Hans India, APSEB Engineers’ Association secretary general Vedavyasa Rao said that since 800 employees of APSEB would be joining duties in Andhra Pradesh soon, as part of bifurcation, Gunadala sub-station site (5.5 acres) would not be sufficient enough to accommodate future needs of the organisation.

“The headquarters of APGENCO and APTransco is also shifting very soon into the buildings that are under construction at Gunadala. Further, many other offices including that for chief engineer, superintending engineers, Capital Region Development Authority, corporate training institute are going to be established on the same site. Transformer oil testing lab, canteen, bank, crèche, indoor stadium, tennis court, headquarters guest house, parking area for about 800 vehicles, are among the other facilities planned on this site.

The available land is required for better utilisation by the power sector for its offices and providing better services to the consumers,” he quoted in a letter submitted to CMD of AP Transco. Reacting to the issue, CPM leader Ch Babu Rao said that the Transco employees were shocked to see survey of the lands on their premises in Gunadala. He opposed the idea of any star hotel in the land which was worth Rs 200 crore.

He criticised the state government for grabbing the government lands and handing them over for private ventures. Babu Rao reminded that the government had already taken away one acre land at Rajiv Gandhi Park belonging to Transco.

While protesting over the same issue, Congress leaders on alleged that the government had been eyeing precious lands near places such as PWD Grounds, Kanakadurga temple, Indira Nagar and Bhavani Islands. Congress leader Kolanukonda Sivaji said, “I get the impression that the state is proposing to dole out these lands to private parties who are close to the political leadership. Such move will attract penal provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act as it will benefit private parties through illegal means at the cost of the public,” he said.
