Anantapur: Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangam organised a dharna near the Collectorate demanding immediate release of Rs 5,000 crore for the district towards crop compensation to farmers and releasing of crop insurance amount and input subsidy to farmers.

Addressing the farmers, AP Rythu Sangam president Tarimela Nagaraju said that the government has to pay Rs 19,500 per acre as crop compensation. The district is plagued with drought conditions for eight consecutive years and is reeling under famine conditions and many farm labourers are on a migration spree. In 2016 Kharif season, groundnut crop was raised in an extent of 6.91 lakh hectares and yellow gram in 67,547 hectares. Crop loans were disbursed to an extent of Rs 4,257 crores. This year all 63 mandals have been declared drought-hit by the government recognising the severity of drought. The Chief Minister had even admitted that rain guns could not save the standing crop.

Tarimela demanded that the Assembly should discuss the drought situation and pass a resolution waiving the crop loans taken during Kharif. He said that a mere Rs 479 crore was allocated in the budget when actually the requirement was to the order of Rs 3,400 crore for the completion of Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi project. The AP Rythu Sangam leaders urged the state government to extend Fasal Bima scheme to the groundnut crop. It also demanded payment of Rs 5 as incentive to milk farmers per litre as it is being implemented by the Karnataka government. Also, farmers should be given cows and buffaloes to every family for supplementing family income.

Rythu Sangam general secretary Chandrasekhar Reddy demanded that loans be rescheduled and fresh loans be given with just 4 per cent interest per annum. The government should implement its election promise of creating a price stabilisation fund. It should also take urgent steps for establishing a Horticulture Hub and open ware houses for the horticulture farmers. The meeting also demanded payment of drought pension to all district farmers.
