Vijayawada: Hot sun was forcing people to stay indoors in the city. Roads wore a deserted look due to sultry weather. People are not venturing out in the afternoon unless they have important works. And they are beating the heat by drinking cold drinks and fruit juices. Many makeshift kiosks of selling fruit juices and soft drinks were opened as the intensity of temperature was hard to cope with.

Water melon push carts and gas soda drink vendors are making a roaring business. People are taking precautions to save their skin. Especially, women have been using umbrellas and covering their face from directly coming in contact with sunrays.

Students appearing for exams are also facing the problem. They are taking excessive liquids to keep themselves cool. Some NGOs have set up stalls for supply of water and buttermilk for free. Grapes, cucumbers, sapota and other fruits were being sold like hot cakes.

People are making special preparations for their children to reduce ill-effects of hot sun on their health. They are stuffing onions, salads prepared with fruits to take from time to time as they have to attend classes and examinations.

The business of ice-cream, water melon, lassi, cold coffee, badam milk, sugandhi water and soft drinks have seen a steady spurt during the past few days. On the other hand, the coolers and air conditioners are high on the agenda of middle and higher middle class people. Many finance companies are providing special offers to the customers, including Re 1 down payment for refrigerators, coolers and air conditioners. The hot conditions in the city are expected to rise further in the coming days.
