Visakhapatnam: The total transport activity across the state came to a standstill with the lorry operators of all southern states, including Union Territory Puducherry, launching an indefinite strike from Thursday protesting against the State and Central governments’ vindictive attitude towards the transport sector.

However, the loaded vehicles, which arrived in the state on Thursday on way to their destinations, were allowed. The lorry operators were protesting against the hike in the third party insurance premiums which will come into force from April 1.

When contacted, Vice-President of Andhra Pradesh Lorry Owners’ Association G V Ramana Rao told The Hans India on Thursday that they were all observing the strike peacefully across the state.

He alleged that the lorry operators were not in a position to bear 50 per cent hike in the insurance premiums in view of the slowdown in the transport business soon after demonetisation and the spurt in the prices of spare parts, oils and lubricants.

The transport industry has been facing rough weather especially in the state as it was the only state collecting Rs 4 extra as VAT per litre on diesel and despite their repeated pleas, the government has not taken any initiative in this regard, he lamented.

He demanded that the Centre implement uniform fee at all the toll gates on all the National Highways across the country and provide driver rest rooms with an ambulance facility.

Refusing the oral offer of the Transport Minister Siddha Raghava Rao that the third party insurance premiums would be reduced, the State Association leaders demanded a written assurance from the insurance companies, he added. Meanwhile, the district administration has taken necessary steps to face the lorry operators’ strike.
