Visakhapatnam: Indian Coast Guard Ship Shaunak, an Offshore Patrol Vessel built by Goa Shipyard Limited, Goa arrived at her base port here on Saturday.

The ship under the command of DIG T Shashi Kumar has undertaken a maiden voyage from Goa to the city and on arrival it was received at Coast Guard Jetty in a traditional ceremony.DIG AK Harbola, Commander Coast Guard (AP), senior officers from Coast Guard and their families, officers and men from ICGS Shaunak were also present.

The ship is 105 metres in length and can achieve a maximum speed of 26 knots with an endurance of 6,500 nautical miles. She is equipped with the state-of-the- art machinery and sensors, advanced navigational and communication equipment. With CRN 91 as its main armament, the ship has adequate weaponry to respond to any threat against its mandated charter.

DIG AK Harbola, Commander Coast Guard (AP), informed that the Coast Guard has recently added two more ships in its existing fleet in Andhra Pradesh and one more Interceptor Boat will also be commissioned on April 13. The Coast Guard is also liaising with the state government for acquiring land to facilitate creation of required infrastructure, he added.
