The East Godavari district has been lagging behind in realising taxes, despite the municipal staff striving during entire March. They have been found to be adopting a negligent attitude in realising property tax. Only four municipalities in the district were able to collect 80 per cent taxes.

The Pithapuram municipality’s share on March 31 was only 46.80 per cent, 3.10 per cent less than that of last year. It is competing for the last place among the 12 civic bodies with Ramachandrapuram with 48.7 per cent. As against the norm of collecting the property tax once in six months, the civic staff is found to be concentrating only in March.

As a result, the tax demand is not matching the collection. The Revenue staff has been laying stress only on levying taxes and changes in assessment, besides other duties, throughout the year. The staff of Mandapeta civic body has been in the forefront of tax collection since early March.

It was able to collect 84 per cent taxes to stand first in the district. It was also able to do well last year. Among the tax defaulters are prominent politicians and top officials. The civic staff has been forced to accept whatever the amount they pay as taxes. The tax dues of ten persons in Pithapuram are about Rs.35 lakh.

The staff is not able to even issue notices to the defaulters. Another reason for the low realisation of taxes is the public expectation of getting a rebate on interest. Even cases in courts seeking tax rebate are pending. Such situation is prevailing in almost all municipalities.
