Nellore: Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu claimed that there is a surge in digital payments by three times (Rs 254.50 cr in 2013-14 to Rs 865.90 cr in 2016-17) and a significant increase in digital transactions made through UPI (3 lakh to 45 lakh).

Launching Digi Dhan Mela at ACSR stadium, here on Saturday, the Union Minister said the Prime Minister has been pushing for digital literacy among all sections of people for achieving the goal of digital economy.

Naidu also mentioned that Aadhaar-based payments jumped by 1,352 per cent. “RuPay card usage increased from Rs 10.80 crore in 2014-15 to 212.90 crore in 2016-17. One can curb black money with digital transactions,” he maintained and appealed to people to transact digitally.

Terming demonetisation as a bold and historic step by the Central government to fight corruption, black money, terrorism and counterfeit currency, he appreciated patience of the huge population, who supported the decision.

“Subsequent to the action by the Union government in November last, crores of rupees were deposited in banks across the country thus paving way for taking up more development programmes for the poor,” he noted.

Detailing about Digi Dhan Mela, Venkaiah Naidu said that a total of 2.01 crore people and 15.51 lakh shop keepers in 650 districts and 5,735 blocks were trained under this scheme and subsequently the government had launched BHIM app using Aadhaar platform and Unified Payment Interface (UPI) to facilitate e-payments directly through bank.

The Minister asserted that corruption would significantly decreas with digital transactions. He also appealed to people to link their Aadhaar with banks for more transparency. Health Minister Dr Kamineni Srinivas, Tirupati MP Dr Varaparasada Rao, director of Niti Aayog Neeraj Kumar Srivastava, ZP chairman B Raghavendra Reddy, Nellore rural MLA K Sridhar Reddy, collector R Mutyala Raju, joint collector Imtiaz, and others were present.
