Sun stroke deaths are rising alarmingly in the district for quite some time. So far around 15 persons were said to have died due to sun stroke but those were not certified by the medical department. In mid- March the temperatures have gone up to 42 degree Celsius. Since last twenty days, Kurnool district has sizzled with high temperature.

In most of the towns the temperature has crossed 40 degree Celsius while the mercury in the district head quarter has touched to 42 which is said to be the season’s highest temperature.Severe heat waves are prevailing in several parts of district. Almost all towns have been virtually turned into a furnace.
Nandyal, Dhone, Adoni and Yammiganur in the district have recorded maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. Streets wore a deserted look in Kurnool, Nandyal and other towns as people remained indoors to escape the blazing sun. People began to feel the scorching heat from 9 in the early morning.
With many old timers saying that they have never experienced such a severe heat in years together. Scorching heat continued in Kurnool with temperature touching 42 degrees regularly. It was the highest temperature of the starting days of summer season.
The heat waves claimed at least 15 lives across the district Anyhow, the heat waves have hit normal life in several towns in the district. To escape from the fury of the sun several people have confined to their houses. The daily wage earners were the worst hit while others postponed their works to evening times.
Those who came out had their heads covered with scarf and caps. Roadside shops selling ice-creams, cool drinks, sugarcane juice and coconut water did a brisk business.District Medical and Health Officer, Dr M Meenakshi Mahadev said that the deaths taking place in the district are nowhere concerned to sunstroke. They might have occured due to various reasons, she added.
Sunstroke deaths would be certified by a team of committee members formed with police, revenue and medial officers, she said.The deaths registered so far have no symptoms of sunstroke, she stated. Anyhow, the medical department has taken preventive measures to overcome the sun strokes across the district, the DMHO said.
Every health center was supplied with sufficient stocks of ORS sachets at 18 Primary Health Care Centers (PHCs) and water distributing centers (Chalivendras) have been set up at bus stations and at every village besides distribution of butter milk pockets, she stated.
She also stated that they have started special drives to create awareness among the public in this regard by conducting daily camps. In addition to awareness camps they are also educating people via distribution of pamphlets, publicity through city cable, announcements via FM radio and other means of publicity like displaying of hoardings.
We are taking the assistance of 108 ambulance services in case of any emergency stated the Medical Officer Meenakshi Mahadev.
