Pithapuram: The mist poured cold water on the aspirations of mango farmers causing heavy damage to the mango crop and the loss is put at Rs 80,000 an acre. The morale of the farmer, who was confident of making a killing till the other day, is sagging with the mist-affected mangoes turning black.

Rot has set in the mango seed leading to the mangoes falling off from the tree. Last year, the farmer faced similar problems. However, he put a brave front of reaping profits this year but the mist has played the spoil sport. Mango orchards are spread over 60,000 hectares in the district and mangoes are extensively cultivated in Pithapuram, Gollaprolu, Kottapalli, Tondangi, Prattipadu, Yeleswaram, Tuni and other mandals of the district.

Mangoes are exported to West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, Maharashtra and other states annually. High temperatures during day time and mist during night are playing havoc with the mango crop. The farmer is disturbed over the mist spoiling the crop at the time of harvesting the mangoes.

On account of the mist, a kilo of mangoes, which were sold for Rs 20, is being sold at Rs 6.
