Vijayawada: Irate Rayalaseema organisations are initiating people’s movement without affiliation of political parties demanding drinking and irrigation water to the region in the backdrop of drop in water levels below 800 feet in Srisailam reservoir and redistribution of water allotted to the state for catering to the needs of the Rayalaseema and allocate diverted
Godavari water to Rayalaseema districts.

The Rayalaseema Saguneeti Sadhana Samithi (RSSS) on Monday held one-day hunger strike in Kadapa, Kurnool, Anantapur and Chittoor districts as part of its three-month long protests on the issue and it planned to hold a public meeting on May 21 in Nandyal of Kurnool district.

The RSSS has demanded the state government to divert the water which was drawing through Pattiseema Lift Irrigation project to Rayalaseema region and redistribute the water share allotted to Andhra Pradesh during bifurcation of erstwhile state making clear and statutory allocations to Rayalaseema Region.

RSSS president Dasaratha Rami Reddy said one of the main aims behind holding the hunger strike was to highlight biased attitude of all political parties towards drought prone Rayalaseema region. “We held hunger strike in 100 centres of four districts and submitted memoranda,” he said.

Speaking to The Hans India over the phone, another RSSS representative Y Nagi Reddy urged the Central government to redistribute water allotted to the state to cater the needs of the Rayalaseema region and allocate diverted Godavari water to Rayalaseema districts.

He also said that the RSSS demands the Central government to establish a water commission in the state to solve water concerns of Rayalaseema with specific authority. The state government should complete Galeru-Nagari Sujala Sravanti, Handri-Neeva, Veligonda and Telugu Gana projects on priority basis as per its assurance and undertake stabilisation projects, he demanded.
