Vijayawada: Panchayat Raj and Rural Development (PR&RD) Commissioner B Ramanjaneyulu said on Tuesday that the state government would give top priority to provide Under Ground Drainage (UGD) system in panchayats under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

Ramanjaneyulu said Rs.400 crore would be allotted for creating UGD facility in all 13 districts of the state. He made it clear that Open Defecation-Free (ODF) villages would get first priority in the state. “About 2,500 km UGD works would be taken up the 2017-18 financial year,” he added.

Speaking to newsmen at a press conference, here on Tuesday, he said that all villages will get UGD facility under MGNREGS funds. “A pilot project was taken up in West Godavari district and the results were fruitful,” he informed.
“As per Union government norms each village would get Rs 40 lakh worth of UGD works. The state government is aiming at securing first place in ODF in the country,” he explained.

The PR commissioner informed that sports facilities will also be provided in rural areas. “About 70 divisional sports stadiums would be constructed in the state at cost of Rs140 crore, he announced. Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) would release 50 per cent funds for the construction of stadiums,” he added.
