Tirupati: The Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) has collected 93 per cent property tax in 2016-17 financial year. It is a record collection compared to last fiscal year’s 91 per cent. The corporation set a target of collecting Rs 37.39 crore and it successfully collected Rs 35.5 crore before March 31, 2017.

This property tax was collected purely on private assessments. Civic body had put forth all efforts for collecting property tax in the last three months. MCT revenue department deployed a total 150 staff for collection of property tax. The corporation commissioner has arranged four special tax collection counters covering the 50 divisions in pilgrim city.

He ensured counters worked from 8 am to 8 pm. After completion of deadline, notices were issued for taxpayers who failed to pay arrears. In addition, the MCT has to receive Rs 33 crore of tax arrears from the 300 government and TTD assets.

Speaking to The Hans India MCT Revenue Officer Sethu Madav said that the staff has concentrated on private property tax collections and succeeded in enhancing the corporation income through taxes.

“But, tax arrears from the government and TTD buildings are pending and have to be taken up at higher level. Already, we requested the TTD to pay old arrears of property tax,” Sethu mentioned.
