Pithapuram: Keeping with the age-old tradition Sitarama kalyanam was conducted at a different ‘muhurtam’ - during night in Chebrolu village of Gollaprolu mandal, as against the prevailing practice of conducting during the afternoon in famous shrines like Annavaram, Tirupati and Bhadrachalam.

On Wednesday night Srirama kalyanam was organised on a grand scale in the Chebrolu temple. The shrine was decorated with electric lights. The Chebrolu Sitarama Temple was constructed during the regime of Pithapuram King Gangadhara Rama Rao. Since then the villagers have been celebrating the celestial wedding during nights. The King used to attend the Sitarama kalyanam in all villages.

By the time he reached Chebrolu it used to be midnight. Priests would delay the wedding rituals till his arrival. He used to compulsorily attend the event in the village, at the instance of his niece who used to insist on his presence. The Chebrolu temple archakas told The Hans India that it was the only shrine in the country to organise the celestial wedding at around midnight.

Local residents believe that the village prospered because of this practice, even when the rest of the state faced drought.
