Nellore/ Varanasi: A Nellore student pursuing IIT at Varanasi’s Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the balcony of his hostel room on Tuesday night, police said on Wednesday.

The student, Dara Jai Bhim Raju, who hails from Naidupet in Nellore district, obtained a seat in the prestigious institution on merit basis. According to sources, Raju is not such a coward to commit suicide.

Bhim Raju’s father Krishnaiah works as TC in the Railways at Naidupet and the family got the communication about his death from his friends. “My son was not a timid person to commit suicide.

But, we don’t know how it had happened and we are rushing to Varanasi,” said Krishnaiah. Raju’s family members suspect his caste could be the reason behind his death and fear that he was murdered.

There is another version that the student had allegedly set himself ablaze before committing suicide by jumping from the balcony of his hostel room. He was accommodated on the third floor of Ramanuj Hostel on the campus premises.

After hearing his screams, other students informed members of the hostel management about the incident. Raju, subsequently, was taken to Sir Sundar Lal Hospital located in BHU where he died during treatment.

Police announced in Varanasi that initial probe revealed them Raju was reportedly upset over his poor grades in the semester examination and reportedly had not been interacting with other students in the hostel for some time. Police have seized Raju’s mobile phone for a probe. Security has been tightened on the campus as a precautionary measure.
